Synopsis: Two male spies compete over the same woman.

Review: I’ve managed to avoid the famed cinematic output of action-movie maestro ‘McG’ so far. This master auteur of the Charlies Angels series is back with This Means War – a bizarre hotch-potch of a rom-com and spy flick – and I’ve got to say it’s one of the most strangely surreal films I’ve ever seen (in a completely blithe, psychotic kind of way). I know it has low artistic aspirations, but still, for a movie ostensibly set in a real place (LA), with real people, and (potentially) real dramatic situations, nothing seems to resemble anything even remotely human or life-like. It feels more like the first vague sketch of a goofy film concept, than anything else. And it’s the film sheer confidence in its own stupidity that impresses me. It’s hard not to laugh along with Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as they mark their way through the preposterous plot. Sadly, US comic Chelsea Handler, as the ‘light relief’ best friend of the piece, fares less well in her stereotypically sassy role. (March 2012)
