Review: I’m watching the Pirates of the Caribbean saga non-chronologically – though I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t affect my appreciation of the dramatic nuances of the franchise. This is my second Pirates of the Caribbean film of the day, and it feels like my face has been slapped around by a wet fish for the last few hours. I’m still baffled as to what the series is actually all about, as everything is so bloated and over-the top – from the money it must have all cost, to the convoluted plot, the bucket loads of spectacle, and far too many characters on show. I think I can vouch for Dead Man’s Chest being better than the On Stranger Tides version I’ve just seen at the cinema, and I’m pretty sure that Gore Verbinski is a better director than Rob Marshall, but that’s about the sum of my thoughts on the films, I’m afraid… (May 2011)
