Synopsis: Corporate hatchet-man (George Clooney) finds his conscience troubled when a young executive (Anna Kendrick) joins him on his travels….

Review: Seemingly smart and topical, I actually found Up in the Air a little too obvious, with its premise about a heartless, self-serving corporate hatchet-man getting his conscience pricked, actually proving depressingly formulaic. Reitman plays into the material too much with motifs of Clooney packing his luggage tidily and gleefully swiping his airmiles, and most literally of all, having Clooney run seminars where he espouses the merits of ‘travelling light’ (thematic subtext screaming out there). That said, if you overlook the essential flimsiness of the film’s construct, it is kind of enjoyable. The lead trio of Clooney, Kendrick and Farmiga craft sympathetic performances, and just about keep the film from lapsing into caricature. (June 2010)
