Three Colours: Blue

September 11, 2010

Three Colours: Blue (1993)
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Actors: Juliette Binoche, Benoit Regent, Florence Pernal

Kieslowski’s Blue segment of his Three Colours trilogy is essentially a high-minded, extended visual treatise on the idea of grief. Kieslowski’s greatest strength is in “showing” his protagonist’s psychological journey, rather than “telling” it. Juliette Binoche’s face explains as much about her character’s emotions than any conventional scripting could do, and the recurrence of the colour blue as a metaphor for rebirth is one of the most pleasing and beautiful elements in the film.
