Synopsis: The genesis of Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) is complete….

Review: Confirmation, if it were needed, that the Star Wars franchise has diminished, both visually and intellectually, into something more akin to a cartoon or video game than an actual motion picture, is confirmed by the climax to George Lucas’s prequel trilogy.

Arguably, the pièce de resistance of naffness for the whole trilogy comes in the opening sequence to this movie, as Lucas shows all the dramatic nous of an impatient child, by throwing the audience straight into an overly busy, yet leadenly conveyed, space battle that makes uncomfortable comparison with the infinitely superior fighting sequence that climaxes Star Wars (1977). The only person who seems to be reading from the correct hymn sheet in this whole endeavour is Ian McDiarmid who gives a riotously enjoyable turn as the increasingly malevolent Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine, and in doing so completely outshines Hayden Christensen’s transformation into Darth Vader.
