Star Trek (2009)
Director: J.J. Abrams
Actors: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana

Synopsis: A young James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr Spock (Zachary Quinto) join forces on the Starship Enterprise….

Review: This is a really decent attempt at ‘rebooting’ the Star Trek franchise by J.J.Abrams, with the emphasis being very much on fun and light-hearted entertainment, and positioning the film well away from the recent glut of pretentious and ‘dark’ graphic novel movies where ‘origin’ and psychology are accorded odious levels of importance. There is nothing overly revelatory about Abrams’ reinvention – it’s merely a cleverly-told tale, toying nicely with the audience’s perception of previously iconic characters, while encasing them competently enough in an imaginatively-realised universe, full of spectacular set-pieces. Even if at times the narrative is a bit fuzzy, there is no doubting the intelligence of Abrams’ direction, with each frame and sequence seeming to have something going on and some kernel of a dramatic or cinematographic idea. Populating the story with relatively new faces – Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto – is a good tactic from Abrams, and put alongside old pros like Bruce Greenwood and a returning Leonard Nimoy, they bring a zest to the proceedings that promises future spin-offs from this excellent opener.
