Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Director: Tim Burton
Actors: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson

Synopsis: New York cop, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp), heads north into upstate New York to solve some grisly murders….

Review: This is one of my cinematic ‘guilty pleasures’. As a whodunnit it is pretty lame, for a horror movie it isn’t particularly scary, and the comedic elements don’t really work – but there is something undeniably delicious and gorgeous about Tim Burton’s treatment of the story that demands admiration. It’s a great family spooker with all the ghoulish elements (creepy musical score, fantastical woodland setting, iconic ‘Headless Horseman’ bogeyman), yet there is nothing nasty or gratuitous about the proceedings. Instead Burton gorges on the sensuous elements of the story: the palette and look of the film are beautiful, the costumes and period details are great, and the performances from a rogue’s gallery of esteemed character actors are sublime. In short, this is an enjoyable, light-hearted slice of Halloween hokum. (November 2009)
