Synopsis: The rise-fall-rise of Julia (Annette Bening) in the London theatrical scene of the 1930s.

Review: In its own limited way, the film generally works: as a frothy and undemanding pastiche of London’s thirties theatre scene. It would be stating the obvious to complain that the film lacks a certain cinematic verve (considering the material is based on a novella and set very much in the theatrical world) but the central narrative conceit about the inherent ‘diva’ within Annette Bening’s lead West End actress, Julia – whether on or off stage – is always played just the right side of irretrievable ripeness.
