Synopsis: The lives and loves of poor girl, turned celebrated novelist, Angel Deverell (Romola Garai).

Review: Presumably with this romantic pastiche of a literary heroine, François Ozon was pitching it somewhere between Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven and Pedro Almodóvar’s lurid melodramas. Alas, the end-result is horribly askew, as Angel lacks the sincerity and subtlety of Haynes’ film, and Almodóvar’s similarly camp paeans to womanhood are infinitely more intelligent, kaleidoscopic and cinematic than Ozon’s confection. Even as a flamboyant ode to romanticism and the doughty spirit of Romola Garai’s haughty protagonist, Angel is distinctly one-note – dramatically shapeless and satirically flat. (March 2010)
